Anna (surnames suppressed for privacy reasons) first complained of back pain when she was just 2 years old. By the age of 3 her parents couldn’t ignore her pain anymore and had her checked out by an orthopaedic surgeon. He advised that she was fine however physiotherapy would help. The physiotherapist advised that Anna was hyper-mobile and gave her some exercises. Needless to say that at three years old, she was not interested in doing exercises.

Anna had never really been interested in playing ball games or other physical activity. Her parents discovered later that her lack of interest was due to her embarrassment at being “bad” at these things. She had no confidence in her own ability. She couldn’t catch a ball and was very uncoordinated.

At the age of 8 it appeared that Anna was not growing straight. Her parents had Anna assessed by a physiotherapist who advised she had a functional scoliosis. Anna was sent to a podiatrist for orthotics and was also recommended to attend the BOUNCE Back 4 Kids programme being developed by Trish Wisbey-Roth and Tahnee Westbury in order to strengthen her body.

She enjoyed the classes with parents noticing changes happening in her even though she scored ‘below-average’ in her pre-assessment. Anna quickly began to gain improve in strength and confidence. She was learning techniques to help her when playing sport and by the end of the 8 weeks was doing things she could never do before, she was even trying things she would never have tried before. Her post assessment indicated a great improvement scoring ‘above average’.

Anna recently competed in her school’s Cross Country event and came third in the 10 year girls category. She then went to compete in the Zone Cross Country event and is still motivated to continue the BB4Kids exercise games at home. She now has a lot more confidence in her own abilities and is far more happy to play sport at home and at school. Anna does have to try a little harder than most kids and maybe she can’t be great at everything but overall she is a much happier and active little girl thanks to the BOUNCE Back 4 Kids program.
